Our online manuals are pdf format documents that require Adobe Acrobat Reader 3.0+ to view. These documents have been optimized for page-at-a-time downloading (byte-serving). With byte-serving, the Web server sends only the requested page of information to the user, not the entire PDF document. This results in faster access time to the specific page you need to view without having to wait for the entire document to download.

To take advantage of this byte-serving you need to have your Acrobat Reader configured to view the manuals "in line" in your browser (vs. a separate "helper" application). This means that the parts manuals will be shown in your browser similar to other html documents.

When you install Acrobat Reader the installation program looks for your browser installation and attempts to configure Acrobat Reader and your browser so it will correctly view byte-served pdf documents. If the parts manuals are being displayed in a separate Acrobat Reader window (vs. inside your browser) then you need install the Web browser plug in as follows:

To install the Web browser plug-in (Windows):

  1. Open File Manager or Windows Explorer.
  2. Locate the Acrobat8\ Reader\ Browser folder.
  3. Copy the NPPDF32. dll or NPPDF16. dll file to your Web browser's plug- in folder.

To install the Web browser plug-in (Macintosh):

  1. Open the Web Browser Plug- in folder within the Adobe Acrobat 3.0+ folder.
  2. Copy the PDFViewer plug- in to your Web browser's plug- in folder.

To install the Web browser plug-in (UNIX):

  1. Run <installdir>/ Browsers/ netscape.

Hints:

For faster access to a manual you can download an entire manual to your local computer.

Advantages:

  • Faster access time next time you want to view the manual

Disadvantages:

  • The manual will possibly be out of date, next time you look at it, because the manuals on our web site are updated whenever we make changes.

To Download an entire manual:
In Netscape this can be accomplished by holding down the the shift key and then selecting the manual you want to download. This will cause a file selection dialogue window to popup. Select the directory to download the manual to. You can optionally rename the manual at this time. In order to keep your files organized on your computer you should probably create a directory called c:\manuals and store any downloaded manuals in this directory. This directory will have to be created before you try to download a manual.

To View a downloaded manual:
In Netscape you select File, then Open File.... This will cause a file selection dialogue window to popup. Simply go the the directory you downloaded the manual(s) to and select the manual you want to look at.
